Production software. AI included.

I’m Teemu Piirainen, a hands-on software developer and AI engineer.

I build production software across backend, mobile and cloud. Today that work also includes AI applications, agentic systems and AI-assisted software engineering.

The Short Version

I understand both the customer problem
and the engineering work.

The value I bring comes from combining product and delivery judgement with hands-on software engineering. I have run my own software consultancy since 2004 and worked as a founder or co-founder in four startups. That has made winning customer trust, shaping the right problem, making commercial trade-offs and staying accountable for delivery part of how I work.

I am a hands-on engineer first. I lead and architect when needed, but I stay directly involved in the code, integrations, debugging and production delivery.

Today I apply that foundation to production AI applications and AI-native development systems. I am most useful when an AI prototype, complex product idea or difficult customer problem has to become a system that can be understood, verified and operated in practice.

The Path Here

Product, engineering
and now AI-native systems.

Running my own software consultancy since 2004 has been the continuous thread through every stage below. It has meant winning and retaining clients, shaping projects, making commercial decisions and remaining accountable for the outcome — not only the implementation.

  1. 1998 - Product and delivery

I began by leading software projects, products and teams as a project manager, certified Scrum Master and consultant. The work taught me how technical decisions affect customers, schedules, budgets and business outcomes.

  2. 2013 - Mobile engineering

I moved into hands-on development and building native iOS and Android applications, alongside Flutter cross-platform products. I worked across product design, implementation, integrations, releases and production support.

  3. 2017 - Backend and cloud

My work expanded into APIs, distributed services, cloud platforms and enterprise integrations. I have built systems involving strong authentication, sensitive data, observability and demanding production environments.

  4. 2022 - AI engineering

I now build production AI applications and agentic development systems. My focus includes orchestration, evaluation, safety, observability and the architectural and human decision boundaries needed to make AI useful outside a demo.

Speaking & Training

Building it is one thing.
Getting a team to adopt it is another.

For over ten years I have trained and spoken on Agile and Lean delivery. Over the past year that work has focused on AI adoption: helping organizations move from AI pilots to everyday practice.

As a keynote speaker and freelance trainer I have worked with 1000+ professionals on making these changes hold up in real teams, not just in a slide deck.

What I Bring

Engineering depth

I work hands-on across AI applications, backend services, mobile products, cloud platforms, integrations and observability. That breadth lets me design the whole system around the model, implement its critical parts myself and judge whether the result is secure, maintainable and ready for production.

Customer-facing problem solving

Running my own consultancy has taught me to turn ambiguous customer needs into concrete product and engineering decisions—and to earn the trust required to keep working together over time. I can discuss trade-offs with senior stakeholders and pair on code with their engineers in the same afternoon.

End-to-end ownership

I take responsibility from problem framing through architecture, implementation, release and operation. I make trade-offs, remove blockers and coordinate people when needed, but I stay close to the code. After launch, I remain accountable for how the system behaves, how it is measured and what must improve.

Production Experience

I have learned to build
where failure has consequences.

Security-critical public systems

I have built backend and mobile systems involving strong authentication, personal data, multiple integrations and restricted security environments.

Regulated health technology

I have worked in ISO 13485 environments and helped build products used by some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.

Outside the Work

Systems everywhere,
not only in code.

When I am not building software, I am usually cycling a long way, experimenting with another new idea or trying to understand something in physics that initially looked simple. Many of those rides happen in conversation with Nipsu, my AI companion. Apparently I pair with an AI even off the clock.
